The Studio Theatre Club: Documents
This page contains reproductions of several historical documents pertaining to the Studio Theatre Club.Below is a reproduction of a letter promoting the Studio Theatre Club in London and offering details of membership. Prior to 1968, all plays had to be approved and licensed by the Lord Chamberlain's Office. During the 1950s and 1960s, it became common for theatre clubs to be formed, essentially private members clubs, which could perform unlicensed plays (such as the Studio Theatre Ltd with the first British production of Sartre's Huis Clois). As a result, only members of the theatre clubs could buy tickets for the shows.
This is a membership form for the Studio Theatre Club.
The final image is an advert for Studio Theatre Club, taken from the June 1957 edition of Encore magazine to which Stephen Joseph had contributed a piece about new writing in London. The advert was published just months prior to Stephen Joseph closing the Studio Theatre Club during the same year (there was a single production in 1958, but at a different venue).
