Artistic, Associate & Executive Directors (1996 - 2008)

This page looks at the creative and administrative executives who ran the Stephen Joseph Theatre in the round in Scarborough from 1996 to 2009. It details the role and people who held the position of Artistic Director, Associate Director and Executive Director.

Artistic Director

Alan Ayckbourn became Artistic Director of Theatre in the Round at the Library Theatre in 1972 and oversaw the company's move to both the Stephen Joseph Theatre in the Round and the Stephen Joseph Theatre.

He continued to work as Artistic Director until 31 March 2009, having made the decision to step down following his stoke in February 2006.

During this period - during his entire time as Artistic Director - Alan Ayckbourn did not draw a wage as Artistic Director with the money saved invested back into the company.

Associate Director (1996 - 2009)

At various points in the history of the company, Associate Directors (occasionally known as Assistant Directors) were also appointed.

Laurie Sansom (2004 - 2006)

Executive Director

When the company moved to its third home in 1996 at the Stephen Joseph Theatre, it essentially doubled in size - both in terms of venue and employees. As a result - and apparently as a condition by the Arts Council - the theatre was obliged to appoint its first Executive Director (the General Administrator).

Stephen Wood (1996 - 2015)
