The A - Z is an alphabetical guide to people, places and events relating to theatre - with an emphasis on theatre in the round - in Scarborough. Hall, Sir Peter: Former Artistic Director of the National Theatre, who first commissioned plays by Alan Ayckbourn for the National Theatre. He also invited Alan to become a company director at the venue between 1986 and 1988. As a result of his connection with the playwright, he visited Scarborough on a number of occasions including hiding at the playwright's home in the town from the press when his third marriage was revealed to be on the rocks.

Hebden, Malcolm: Former Associate Director of the Stephen Joseph Theatre in the Round. Malcolm Hebden (1939 - present) joined the company as an actor in 1975 and acted and directed for the company throughout the '70s and '80s. He was Associate Director from 1990 to 1996, leaving to concentrate on his acting career. He is best known for his role of Norris in the television soap opera Coronation Street.

Herford, Robin: Prolific actor in Alan Ayckbourn's repertory companies between 1977 and 1987, premiering a number of major Ayckbourn characters. Now a respected director of Ayckbourn plays among others (including the world premiere and West End productions of Stephen Mallatratt's The Woman In Black), Robin was also the Co-Artistic Director of the Stephen Joseph Theatre In The Round, Scarborough, during Alan Ayckbourn's sabbatical to the National Theatre between 1987 and 1988.

High School For Boys: The Stephen Joseph Theatre in the Round moved into Scarborough's Municipal School between 1976 and 1995, which was also the town's High School For Boys between 1922 and 1959.

Hill, Susan: Scarborough-born author who wrote The Woman in Black, which was adapted for the stage by Stephen Mallatratt for the Stephen Joseph Theatre in the Round in 1987 before going on to become the second longest running play in the West End. Susan Hill (1942 - present) is particularly known for her supernatural fiction and her Simon Serrailler detective novels.

Hollywood Plaza Cinema: Single screen cinema on North Marine Road which originally opened as the North Bay Cinema in 1914. It closed in 1926 and became a garage before being restored as a cinema in 1981 which operates to this day.
